Swim the Suck 2013

edited January 2013 in Event Announcements
I just saw on FB that there are hardly any slots left for StS 2013, so thought I could start this post.

This was one of my favorite swims last year and I'm looking forward to swimming it again.

Anyone else in the forums taking part?

Just signed up. The web page is showing only three slots left, though that did not update after I signed up.

Not this year... I'll be in debtors' prison by then
  • Hi, new here, first post. I swam this one last year and have signed up again for 2013, longest swim I have ever done!

Swim is full, per race director @KarahFriberg. I was very fortunate to be a participant in the first-ever Swim the Suck two years ago, and recommend it highly.

I think this might be the soonest-to-sell-out swim in the U.S., outside MIMS?

  • Hi. I am excited the swim sold out so quickly! I can do a lot with the profiles now and playing around with the data. I will start a waiting list now, just email me at [email protected] I expect 10 or so cancellations due to injuries, weddings, etc.

It's not a marathon swim, but the Chesapeake Bay Swim (4.4 miles) sells out 600-ish spots in something like 45 minutes or less.

I ignore that swim because their wetsuit policy incentivizes the use of wetsuits even in dangerously warm water. Someone even died a couple of years ago.
  • Reading about the Suck is what got me first interested in ows as a stand alone event. I'm going to do this race some day. Had hoped to do it this year or next, but injuries have pushed back my bucket list of races. So many races, so little time....
  • I am really looking forward to this swim and getting to visit this part of the country.

They've sent out the 2012 video by email. Not sure if it is on the website yet.

    Thanks Karah for the video!

  • Newbie here and just wanted to say hi. I will be doing Swim The Suck this year and I'm a bit nervous but couldn't be more excited. I hope to get to know you all better.

Good luck everyone this weekend! I'm hoping you get a good push from the dam.

What a fun event! Beautiful day, gorgeous location and great people.

Decent push from the current at the start though it seemed to die off a little in the second half. That said according to my GPS I was averaging around ~25minute mile splits and I am more of a 36+minute mile over a long swim person so not complaining at all :-)

Enough swimmers that someone was always in sight which helped engage "race mode" a little even for a back of the pack person like myself.

Winner was the Ashley Whitney ('96 Olympic Gold medalist 4 x200m Freestyle)

    Would definitely do this again.

We missed you @IronMike and @ChickenOSea. It was another great time in Chattanooga with a beautiful day, friendly people and plenty of post swim beer.

Another strong race from @dc_in_sf. You are a middle of the pack guy now. You are making the true back of the pack guys feel really slow.

What was the "piece of original artwork" this year? Anyone got a picture they'd be willing to upload?
  • I really really want to do this next year. I have an alarm set for Jan 1 when registration opens!
  • @sarah_q Registration for next year will open 2/1/14 so it won't interfere with holiday.

@IronMike Artwork was a stained glass wall piece. I don't know how to post pictures here but if I remember, I can take picture on phone and text to you this evening.

Thanks to @Niek for extracting the proper URL to the image

I hope to hang it in that window tonight after I pick up some hooks from the hardware store.
