@seaswim PM me your email. I have some Indian users on my site.

  • I discussed the Palk Strait with a client in Colombo last year; it's roughly 30km if I remember it correctly and quite shallow. There was s/th on the OWS website when an Indian crossed from SL to India. We were a bit clueless who to approach for approval and so didn't get much further. Are you living around there?

User on my site Jitendra Khasnis an open water Swimmer, Coach & Organizer from India is willing to help. Here is his email reply so one can see what obstacles there are in that part off the world:

Dear Will & Of course Niek,

    Welcome to India.

First, feel good to have connection with swimmer. Thanks a lot.

Secondly, bad new is Palk Strait is nightmare as lots of permissions are required and few applications are pending. We need to take permission from SriLanka & India as well as Navy of both countries. Its a diplomatic matter.

Thirdly, good news is you can swim various distances in Mumbai, I mean Arabian Sea. I can arrange that. Of course after 26/11 terrorist attack in Mumbai; it became stricter but no problem. Water is warm & dirty. (we swim!!)

We need to apply State Association, Dy. Conservator, Bombay Port Trust & sometime Commissioner of Police, Mumbai.

I have connection with lots of Boatmen. Only thing is the attempt date depend upon particular day, time, tide, wind etc. So you may have to stay back in Mumbai for while or adjust your dates accordingly.

    Tell me..

I'm training swimmer for 5 K Sea Swim in Malavan and 14 K River Swim in Kolkata and 5 K Sea Swim in Mumbai. All are before Jan. 2014

    All the best...

    Jitu
