We think it is easier to maintain updated and accurate listings on a regional basis. It is also easier for one person to maintain with a minimum time commitment.
As two examples, see the two calendars I currently maintain for Southern California and 10km+ swims in the U.S.
If you are interested in representing your home neck of the woods on marathonswimmers.org (with full credit), please send me a PM through the forum.
Including loops and tidal is genius, I really like the format of that one evmo. Shows me all the relevant infos at one glance without having to go to the event website, which can be a tedious process when looking for suitable swims.
Just to add to the list.. both the Dolphin Club and the South End have swims on their websites. HOWEVER>... swims are only open to club members. It does give you an idea of how many swims can be done in SF Bay area.
Hey Guys,
I would like to update some of our events on the various calendars cited here. Is there a direct link I missed or do we email you individually?
We have a new title sponsor (HCA, Va.) for the Peluso Open Water Race Series which will add some much needed capital to the series. The series has been broken into three very distinct events:
April 19 - Cold Water/Fast Current (1500m)
May 31 - The RVA-Mile (1-mi)
Aug 23 - Glow Swim Series Finale (500m night swimming - multiple heats)
To the Bridge & Back has affiliated with Speedo and is offering a 10-mile event with a $5,000 prize purse along with the original 5-mile event. The 10-miler is limited to 25-male/25-Female athletes and entry is by application (to avoid the button mashing) but not to just the "fast guys". We are looking for compelling stories - are you overcoming a life obstacle, swimming to raise awareness or money, we want you in our event. I appreciate any calendar assistance you can provide.
Thanks Mike,
Yes still on Oct. 4
10-mi and 5-mi events, no 1.0mi or 2.4mi as we've done in the past.
New website was supposed to go live Feb 1 but now we are hoping for Feb 15.
Just updated the DC calendar with yet another new OW swim! Come check out the National Capital Region (encompassing Northern and Souther VA, Southern and Eastern MD, DC) for a swim and go see the Smithsonians (for free!), one of the few good reasons you pay taxes in this country!
We're all just carbon, water, starlight, oxygen and dreams
Update on the Harborfest Tri Swims at National Harbor, MD: WaveOne swimming founder and fellow marathon swimmer, Denis Crean, is trying to make a 5k happen along with the three other swims (750m, 1.2mile, 2.4mile) on 3 August.
If you want to swim the 5K, but would be okay with a 2.4 miler, then sign up for the 2.4. If Denis can make the 5K happen, he will, but you might not find out until that morning if you're swimming 2.4 or 3.1 miles!
So, when you sign up for the 2.4, make a note in your registration and email Denis at info@waveoneswimming.com to tell him you're interested in the 5K.
Announced 5k and 10k just north of Houston have been added to the gulf coast calendar. I know of some other races in the world, but they haven't been announced yet.
Thanks, guys. Your updates have been pushed to the live site.
This is a good excuse to reiterate a standing request:
Is anyone interested in building+maintaining a regional open water swim calendar for their location?
Currently we have US (6 miles+), SoCal, Midwest, NoVa/DC (thanks @IronMike), and Florida/Gulf Coast (thanks @timsroot). But it would be great to have more.
Bump. Reminder that this is a great resource here. And if anyone wants to create a calendar for other regions, it would be greatly appreciated by all of us!
(I noticed in a thread someone looking for DC-area swims, which reminded me of this thread.)
We're all just carbon, water, starlight, oxygen and dreams
Thanks @Franco for helping out with the Mid-Atlantic calendar!
Anyone else interested in maintaining a calendar for their local region? These are very useful resources for the community, and widely viewed via web searches. If interested, send us a message .
Basically, it involves inputting some very basic data (name of swim, web link, location, distances offered) in a Google Spreadsheet, which is then automatically uploaded to MSF servers.
Unfortunately the calendars are still very US-centric. While @Niek already has Europe pretty well covered with openwaterswimming.eu, we certainly welcome contributions from outside the US.
I tried to reach out to the Race Directors for swims in the Mid-Atlantic if the info wasn't readily available. If you are a Race Director in the Mid-Atlantic region and I missed your event , please PM me and I will be happy to add it to the list.
Evan, I would be happy to work on a New England calendar.
Also, is there any chance you can add a column to the US one that lists avg water temp (if known)? I know that would rule some swims out for me automatically (like Key West) because the water's too hot. Just a suggestion. Feel free to throw rotten tomatoes.
I am updating 2016 Calendar for Mid-Atlantic region. Please let me know if you have any info on new events for region. I could also use some help from anyone with 2016 info regarding the VBLA Ocean Swim Series, Lake Moomaw Swim, Cedar Island 5K, Chris Greene Lake cable swim and Valley Forge Marathon Swim. Please send via PM and I will update calendar. Thanks.
Please send any corrections, new dates, or new swims through the contact form.
In addition to the US Marathon Calendar, MSF currently maintains 6 regional OWS calendars: Southern California, Northern California, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Dixie Zone, and New England.
Interested in developing a new regional calendar? Let us know!
I want to personally thank @Franco, @bluemermaid9, and @slknight for owning the Mid-Atlantic, Dixie Zone, and New England (respectively) open water swim calendars this year.
As a small token of appreciation, you'll be receiving an MSF silicone swim cap (or refund if you already ordered one).
Meanwhile... if anyone has any interest in Southern California, Northern California, Midwest, Pacific Northwest, or U.S. Marathons -- or starting a new calendar in a region we don't yet serve -- please let me know!
Quite a lot of people view these calendars via Google searches, so your efforts do make a difference in helping people find open water opportunities in their area - and bringing new people to the sport.
I am updating Mid-Atlantic calendar for 2017. There are a few changes this year that may affect you so I would like to get finished as soon as possible. I would appreciate any help if someone knows status of the following swims for 2017: Atlantic City Bridge to Bridge, VLBA Ocean Swims, Valley Forge Marathon Swim, Cedar Island 5K.
I have reached out to a few Race Directors on their 2017 swims and hoping for a prompt response. If you know of some in the region that were not on calendar last year, please PM and let me know.
The long time Potomac Swim for the Environment has been cancelled for 2017. Hopes to return in 2018.
@Franco The AC Bridge to Bridge doesn't get announced typically until at least April, if not May. It's run by a club swimming league and they're not the most organized when it comes to publicity. Cedar Island always is the last Sunday in August, time TBD because it's tide based. Can't imagine it not happening in 2017 unless something crazy happens. Midge Kerr is the RD, though she could be out of town. PM me for her email if you need it.
There is a new offering for a 911 Memorial Swim. 9.11 miles on Lake Hopatcong. As previously mentioned, the Potomac Swim for the Environment is cancelled for 2017. The Md Swim for Life and Swim Ocean City unfortunately fall on same day this year. Swim Ocean City is only offering the 9 mile event this year so I would recommend that for a longer swim and MD Swim for Life if you are looking for distances up to 5 miles. Thanks to all who helped in compiling the list.
Wow, @bluemermaid9 that's an awesome calendar you guys have up there. That 10-miler "Verrazano..." test event you guys are doing. Is it a test because sometime in 2018 it'll be open to all?

@IronMike - My understanding is that it is open to CIBBOWS members only. CIBBOWS has a link on their website to join. As to your question, I'm afraid I can't answer it but perhaps someone on the Forum can?
It is open to CIBBOWS members only, I'm not sure what future plans are. But why postpone joy? Join CIBBOWS (it's a bargain) and pick a date! Me and J9swim are swimming on Saturday, hoping for strong tides, mild winds and a whale or dolphin sighting.
Potomac Swim for the Environment returns this year after a year off.
The Nanticoke River Swim is not happening. They are going with Triathlon only events this year.
The Escape to Lewes Swim in the fall has been moved to Cape May in June and will be called Escape the Cape.
Some swims had not been updated yet but are annual swims typically falling on same weekend. They are noted as tentative date. If you see anything I am missing please PM me and I will get it added.

Are any forum members interested in maintaining a Regional Open Water Swim Calendar for marathonswimmers.org?
We are looking to add more regional calendars to the (currently very short) list on the newly launched main page:

We think it is easier to maintain updated and accurate listings on a regional basis. It is also easier for one person to maintain with a minimum time commitment.

As some on Facebook have pointed out, Bermuda is not in the US, and 6 miles is technically not a marathon swim.
Yes, I know.
And Bermuda is closer than California is for some of us.
